U.S. Naval Academy Graduate, All-American Fencer, U.S. National Champion, Olympian

1969 NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) 1st Team All-American Fencer (1st African American)

1970 NCAA Fencer of the Year (1st African American)

1970 Selected as The U.S. Naval Academy Outstanding Varsity Athlete (1st African American and 1st Fencer).

• At graduation, in June 1970, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. serving as a Combat Engineer Battalion staff officer and Company Commander.
• In addition to his military responsibilities, he continued fencing in open competitions.
• In 1972, he was a U.S. Open National Fencing Champion (2nd African American) and, as a result, he became a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.
•  In 1974, after creating the U.S. Marine Corps Fencing Team, Captain Jeff Kestler, 1st Lieutenant Bert Freeman (himself), 2nd Lieutenant Ed Donofrio and 2nd Lieutenant Pete Solecki, won the 1974 U.S. National Foil Team Fencing Championships.
•  Following his time in the military, he was a process engineer.
•  In 2006, Bert founded T.A.L.K. Associates, a learning and performance company, focused on Positive Direction Communication skills, Workplace Respect, Team Excellence and Organization Development.
